Ocean Positive

Fourth Element

What is an Ocean Positive product?

An Ocean Positive product from Fourth Element is a designation that encompasses various criteria aimed at enhancing the well-being of our oceans. To attain Ocean Positive status, Fourth Element products must fulfil at least one of the following criteria:

Composed of a minimum of 30% recycled materials (with many surpassing this threshold, as seen in Fourth Element swimwear).

Sourced from a certified sustainable origin (exemplified by Fourth Element Yulex natural rubber suits).

Functions as a tool to contribute to the reduction of plastic pollution (evident in products like Fourth Element reusable Gulper bottles).

Fourth Element Ocean Positive Mission

Since 1999, the journey of Fourth Element Ocean Positive has evolved, marked by recent strides in sustainability. Nonetheless, challenges endure, such as the alarming annual accumulation of 8 million tons of plastic waste in our seas and the escalating levels of carbon emissions. Despite these hurdles, Fourth Element remains steadfast in their commitment, believing in the power of action for hope. Fourth Element dedication extends beyond the ocean and permeates everyday practices – from the creation of sustainable garments to the implementation of eco-friendly packaging. In 2021, Fourth Element set ambitious goals for the next decade. Explore these goals below:

Becoming Zero Plastic

In recent years, Fourth Element has been steadfastly working towards the complete elimination of single-use plastic from their packaging. While the initial progress toward this goal faced challenges during the pandemic, the company has made a robust recovery.

Presently, Fourth Element proudly identifies 45% of their products as crafted from a minimum of 30% recycled materials, sourced from items like plastic bottles, old carpets, and discarded fishing nets. Looking ahead to 2030, the company aspires to create a net positive impact. By then, the goal is to ensure that a remarkable 90% of their products are crafted from at least 30% regenerated materials, emphasizing a commitment to sustainability over the use of virgin materials.

Becoming Zero Waste

Fourth Element products are meticulously designed to endure the rigors of adventures, boasting a quality that guarantees a long lifespan. This commitment to durability aligns seamlessly with our sustainability strategy – some of our products have weathered thousands of dives and continue to thrive after many years.

Recognizing that waste can be generated at various points in a product's lifecycle, we take proactive measures to minimize it. We prioritize ordering from smaller suppliers, reducing waste production. Additionally, our cutting patterns are optimized to be as efficient as possible, keeping waste to a minimum. To address the waste produced during production, we recycle scraps from our wetsuits at the source, ensuring a zero-waste approach.

Innovatively, we repurpose leftover fabric from our rashguards and swimwear, transforming them into practical items such as face masks and neck buffs. Looking forward, our commitment extends to reducing waste at the end of our products' lives. Over the next five years, Fourth Element will introduce various schemes to facilitate the re-purposing, repairing, or recycling of 100% of our products.

Becoming Zero Carbon

At Fourth Element headquarters, 60% of our electricity is generated through solar panels, constituting 54% of our total energy consumption on site. We prioritize local sourcing and opt for sea shipping whenever feasible, minimizing our reliance on air transport. Additionally, we encourage our team to work remotely at times to reduce the carbon footprint associated with daily commuting.

Looking ahead to 2030, Fourth Element aspires to achieve carbon neutrality. This ambitious goal involves not only reducing the carbon footprint of our entire operation and transportation but also offsetting the remaining emissions. We plan to achieve this by actively supporting the growth and restoration of major ocean carbon sinks, including sea grass, kelp, and mangroves.

Becoming Zero Impact

Fourth Element holds a special place in their hearts for a range of ocean-based charities and projects, providing essential support through funding or equipment to help them achieve their noble objectives. Notable organizations in their roster include the Olive Ridley Project, Ghost Diving, Coral Restoration Foundation, Global Ghost Gear Initiative, Reef Renewal Foundation, and Bite-Back. In collaboration with kindred spirits, Fourth Element actively partners with entities such as the National Parks Service Submerged Resources team, the Ocean Agency, and others who share a passion for marine conservation.

The commitment of Fourth Element goes beyond financial aid; they played a pivotal role in financing one of the earliest documentaries addressing the challenges of plastic pollution, "A Plastic Ocean." Presently, their focus is on bolstering projects directly dedicated to protecting endangered species and fostering the regeneration of our ocean ecosystems. This strategic approach aims to move closer to reversing the detrimental impact of human activities.

Furthermore, Fourth Element extends its support to initiatives geared towards shaping the leaders and advocates of tomorrow through educational programs, both in the UK and beyond.

Fourth Element

Zero Waste Targets

Fourth Element acknowledges the challenges of completely eliminating virgin materials from their products without compromising diving wear performance. They recognise the inherent waste and environmental impact in manufacturing and transportation. Their vision post-2030 isn't about complete absence but aims for a delicate balance, striving for a net-zero outcome in plastic use, wastage, and carbon emissions. The outlined targets represent steps toward this goal, ensuring your purchases contribute to an overall zero impact on the environment.

Fourth Element Ocean Positive Projects

Working with organisations such as Reef World and Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI), Fourth Elements enthusiastic team of wildlife lovers and keen divers regularly help with activities such as beach cleans and retrieving ghost fishing nets.

 Global Ghost Gear Initiative

The Global Ghost Gear Initiative is another great example of the power of collaboration. There are so many organisations involved with the clear-up, prevention and recycling of Ghost Gear around the world.

Reef-World Foundation

Reef-World is the organisation behind the Green Fins programme for environmentally friendly practices in dive centres. A partner organisation of the UN Environment Programme, Reef-World is at the epicentre of research and policy making that will help to protect our coral reefs and wider ocean environment.

Olive Ridley Project

The Olive Ridley Project (ORP) is based in the Maldives where the organisation works to save turtles, often ensnared in ghost fishing gear or injured in other ways, rehabilitate them and release them back into the wild.

Coral Restoration Foundation

Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) came to Fourth Element create an Ocean Positive UV shield using recycled ocean bound plastics, for its volunteers, staff and for sale to support its work.

World Animal Protection

Fourth Element has worked with World Animal Protection for the last five years, joining their fledgling Global Ghost Gear Initiative, and later collaborating with the UK retailer Fat Face and its charitable foundation to raise thousands of pounds to support the charity’s work, both in the ocean and the wider environment.

Bite-Back Shark Conservation

The UK-based charity is dedicated to shark and marine conservation and it seeks to educate people about the issues facing not only sharks, but fish-life as a whole and aims to empower its supporters to help change the way fish is consumed.
